Field and substrate
Identify each steep-slope and low-slope area separately. Ask what surface is visible, which layers are known, what substrate supports them, and which facts become known only after removal. Proposals should state whether measurements come from field work, plans, imagery, or a combination.
Transitions and penetrations
List walls, valleys, ridges, hips, chimneys, skylights, plumbing vents, exhausts, curbs, drains, scuppers, solar attachments, and roof-to-roof transitions. Each detail should have a removal, preparation, material, tie-in, and closeout answer.
Air, heat, and moisture
Attic ventilation, insulation, air leakage, interior humidity, mechanical exhaust, and roof assembly can produce overlapping evidence. A roofing proposal should state the observed portion and refer work outside its expertise rather than claiming one vent product resolves every moisture condition.
Drainage to discharge
Follow water from roof surface to gutter or drain, then through downspout, leader, outlet, splash area, or site drainage. A provider can repair the roof portion while an underground or grading issue remains. Keep those boundaries explicit.
Put the roof question into words
Have the property type, safe observation, date, and existing records ready. Ask the recipient to identify the company and confirm whether the address and roof concern fit its work.
