Record the event and discovery
Save the official weather reference, date, first observation, wind direction when officially reported, and any changes since the event. Keep people away from unstable trees, lines, edges, and hanging materials. The event record supplies context, not proof that every displaced item came from the roof.
Map debris without handling risk
Photograph debris where it landed and include surrounding landmarks. Do not move sharp, heavy, energized, or overhead material. If a qualified party collects a safe sample, label it by location and custodian. Avoid matching it visually to the roof until an inspector evaluates the system.
Ask for roof-face findings
A report should identify lifted, creased, missing, shifted, opened, or impact conditions by roof zone and material, along with access limits. Ask how edge securement, fasteners, flashing, vents, gutters, siding, and trees were considered. One missing piece does not describe the concealed layers.
Separate protection from final scope
Qualified temporary protection may precede full evaluation. Record it separately. Compare permanent repair or replacement proposals by evidence, compatibility, boundary, and monitoring. Ask the insurer about claim requirements and keep coverage conclusions out of the contractor comparison column.
Put the roof question into words
Have the property type, safe observation, date, and existing records ready. Ask the recipient to identify the company and confirm whether the address and roof concern fit its work.
