Decision guide

Turn an interior water mark into a useful timeline and location record

A stain can show when and where moisture became visible, but it cannot name the exterior entry by itself.

Prepare repeatable interior evidence without disturbing the ceiling.

01

Mark the location

Use a room sketch with wall directions, nearby exterior walls, fixtures, windows, chimneys, and upper floors. Photograph from the same safe position with a scale near, not on, damaged material. Record the first discovery and the outline only if doing so does not touch an unsafe or wet electrical area.

02

Build the timeline

Note rain, wind, temperature, snow or ice if relevant, plumbing use, HVAC operation, and earlier repairs. Record whether the mark grows, dries, changes color, drips, smells, or appears in dry weather. These are inspection clues, not a remote diagnosis.

03

Protect people and contents

Move contents when safe and keep people away from sagging finishes, electrical components, or suspected structural hazards. Use qualified help for containment, opening, drying, or electrical review. Do not puncture a ceiling to release water based on general online instructions.

04

Connect it to the roof map

Give the provider the interior sketch and let it establish orientation to roof faces, valleys, walls, penetrations, plumbing, or equipment. Ask the report to distinguish confirmed path, plausible path, and unexamined area. Retain the map after repair for monitoring.

Put the roof question into words

Have the property type, safe observation, date, and existing records ready. Ask the recipient to identify the company and confirm whether the address and roof concern fit its work.
