Decision guide

Give every roof junction its own removal and tie-in decision

Flashing details become comparable when the proposal says what is removed, prepared, fabricated, retained, and covered.

Turn the phrase flashing as needed into a list of project-specific junctions.

01

Build the junction schedule

List valleys, sidewalls, headwalls, chimneys, skylights, pipes, vents, curbs, roof-to-roof changes, eaves, rakes, gutters, and low-slope transitions by roof zone. Mark material and condition only when observed. This schedule prevents a visible front elevation from standing in for concealed rear details.

02

Separate each layer

For every junction, ask about covering removal, substrate, underlayment, base or step flashing, counterflashing, pan, curb, trim, closures, fasteners, sealants, and tie-in to masonry or siding. Identify what is new, reused, inspected, or excluded.

03

Plan custom metal and other trades

Request profiles, dimensions, finish, joint locations, and approval before fabrication. Coordinate masonry, siding, skylight, HVAC, plumbing, or solar parties while details are open. Record who approves closure and whose warranty covers the interface.

04

Document before concealment

Keep overall location photographs followed by prepared substrate, underlayment, flashing sequence, and finished surface. Retain material identifiers and approved changes. A final close-up of sealant cannot reconstruct the concealed water-shedding path.

Put the roof question into words

Have the property type, safe observation, date, and existing records ready. Ask the recipient to identify the company and confirm whether the address and roof concern fit its work.
